ECO-HOOD

Let's Create An Eco-Friendly Neighborhood Together!

We have been granted by the Department of Energy and Transforming Power Fund to turn our Community G.R.O.W. (Grass Roots Outreach Work) House into create an eco-friendly pilot home to showcase to our community! The goal is to bring energy efficient housing to urban communities

What Is An Eco- Friendly G.R.O.W. Home?

An eco-friendly Grass Roots Outreach Work home is a property that uses sustainable materials and technologies to reduce its environmental impact. This hub will also serves as the FIRST Energy Efficient Climate Resilient RETROFIT home in our community (East Detroit).

Serving as a pilot, we will be showcasing to our community different climate resilient practices that our homeowners can utilize at their home.

Eco-Friendly Sustainable Housing

1 of 5
  • Electrification

Electrification means replacing technologies or processes that use fossil fuels, like internal combustion engines and gas boilers, with electrically-powered equivalents, such as electric vehicles or heat pumps

  • Solar

Solar energy technologies and power plants do not produce air pollution or greenhouse gases when operating. Using solar energy can have a positive, indirect effect on the environment when solar energy replaces or reduces the use of other energy sources that have larger effects on the environment.

  • Insulation & Encapsulation

Insulation is considered eco-friendly because it can:

    • Reduce energy consumptionInsulation reduces the need for heating and cooling systems, which are major contributors to carbon emissions.
    • Lower carbon footprintInsulation reduces the amount of energy needed to heat a home, which in turn reduces the amount of carbon dioxide and other pollutants emitted.
  • Water Efficiency

Water efficiency is eco-friendly becauseit helps protect the environment, public health, and drinking water resources:

    • Preserves water suppliesWater efficiency helps maintain safe water levels in lakes, rivers, and streams. This leaves more water for future use and improves the quality of the water and aquatic habitats.
    • Reduces energy useIt takes a lot of energy to treat and deliver water, and to heat water for cooking, bathing, and cleaning. Using water-saving techniques can reduce the amount of energy used to treat, pump, and heat water.
    • Reduces pollutionWhen water levels are low, pollutants can become more concentrated.
    • Supports agricultureTrees and crops need water to survive, and water efficiency can help ensure that there is enough water for both.
    • Reduces infrastructure costsWater efficiency can reduce the need to expand water infrastructure and develop new supplies.
  • Energy Efficient Mechanicals & Appliances

Energy-efficient appliances are eco-friendly becausethey reduce the amount of energy and water they use, which in turn reduces a household's carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions

  • Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Electric vehicle (EV) chargers are eco-friendly becausethey can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and promote sustainable transportation

Our Vision: Feed Your Neighborhood's Eco-Hood

Our vision is to create an eco-friendly neighborhood consistent of 100 homes that are sustainable and energy efficient. Based on the model of our first Eco-Friendly home located in Detroit, we want to replicate that home creating homeowner longevity and increasing the health of our community. FYN along with Climate Justice Nurse conducted a study, we tested 25 homes for toxic mold (due to lack of flood mitigation) and 85% came back positive for health concerns due to mold damage in their homes. This led us on a mission to create a sustainable neighborhood, increasing the longevity of our community.

We want to thank American Made & The Department of Energy for this opportunity.
